🔘Ayurvedic Point of View on Respiratory Allergies:

Ayurveda Acharyas termed as respiratory allergies as a ‘Shwasa Roga’ or ‘Shwasa Krichrata’.

Shwasa Roga is described as when the normal passage of Prana Vayu is obstructed by Kapha Dosha, it gets vitiated and starts moving in an upward direction, which is unable to perform its normal psychological functions and produces Shwasakashta.

🔘Causes According to Ayurveda:

According to the Ayurveda, mainly two factors are responsible for the weakening of the immune system and the cause of respiratory allergies:

First is:  Family history or genetic predisposition

And second is: Imbalance in three, main life balancing activities – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

These may trigger by:
▪️Excess exposure to unsuitable or unaccustomed: infected, excess dry, oily, heavy food, drink, wrong lifestyle and environment
▪️Any disturbance in the Agni (digestive system)
▪️Ama accumulation (toxins)
▪️Weak immune system
▪️High amounts of allergens in the body
▪️State of Dhatu (tissue), Agni (digestive fire), this determines which tissue or organ system will be affected
▪️Exposure to dust, smoke, cold air, bathing with cold water
▪️Injury of chest or throat

🔘Symptoms According to Ayurveda:

▪️A person who suffered from respiratory allergies can experience the following symptoms:
▪️Pain in the chest region
▪️Sweet less taste of the mouth
▪️Broken voice
▪️Dryness of throat
▪️Sweating
▪️Running nose
▪️Forceful bouts of respiration
▪️Pain in the region of flanks

🔘Pathophysiology of Respiratory Allergies:

According to Ayurvedic concept, when Kapha dosha gets aggravated in the body, it will lead to Strotorodha (blockage in the smallest channels), especially in Prannavaha srotasa (in the upper respiratory tract).

Due to blockage or obstruction, the natural direction of the flow of Vata is blocked and it starts flowing in the reverse direction that condition is known as Pratilom.

Aggravated Prana vayu combines with deranged Kapha dosha in the lungs causing obstruction in the pranavaha srotas (respiratory tract). Hence, Vata is dry in nature and due to its pratilom gati, its natural lubrication is disturbed which leads to various symptoms such as difficulty in breathing, increased respiratory rate, etc.

Home Remedies & Ayurvedic Treatment of Respiratory Allergies:

In chronic condition, if a person takes home remedies along with the Ayurvedic Treatment of Respiratory Allergies, there are more chances to deal with such allergies quickly and a person get rid of seasonal allergies and other respiratory distress. Home remedies play an important role to overcome the symptoms and improve the functioning of the immune system.

▪️Some effective home remedies are mentioned below:

🔹Garlic and Ginger Cloves: Both these herbs are widely used in the treatment of acute to chronic respiratory diseases. They act as an anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial that works in reducing pain, inflammation, chest congestion, etc.

🔹How to use: You can make a ginger tea and mixed 2-3 crushed garlic cloves within it. This remedy is very beneficial to release Kapha accumulation in the airways.

🔸Honey and Cinnamon: This combination appears most helpful as a nighttime cough suppressant. This remedy may lubricate your airways and easing your cough. Honey helps in reducing the inflammation in the bronchial tubes and helps to break up the mucus that is making it is hard to breathe.

🔸How to use: You can mix one teaspoon of cinnamon and 1/4th teaspoon of trikatu powder into a cup of boiling water. Let it steep for about 10 – 15 minutes and then add 1 teaspoon before drinking. Take this remedy once daily.

🔹Bay leaf: Bay leaves are very beneficial in reducing inflammation, alleviating respiratory issues, and improve the digestive system. It acts as anti-bacterial and very effective in loosen up the phlegm and eliminate dangerous bacteria that may be trapped in your respiratory tracts.

🔹How to use:  Mix a half teaspoon of bay leaf in 1/4th teaspoon of pippali powder, and then add 1 teaspoon of honey in it. Take th

❓Swarna Prashana- ayurvedic method of natural immunization❓

➡️ It is believed that every aspect of life is sacred, so each important stage, from conception to anteyeshti (death cremation) is distinguished as special rituals. These series of rituals are known as samskaras. According to the classical hindu texts, there are 16 special rituals, termed as Shodasha Samskara. They are connected with the major events of life such as pregnancy, childbirth, naming ceremony, education, marriage, etc. These samskaras enables us to live a complete fulfilling physical and spiritual life.
➡️ In Ayurveda, the word samskara introduced as “Samskaro hi Gunaantaradhanam” means qualitative improvement is carried out by incorporating the specific qualities.

➡️ Samskara described in Ayurvedic texts are based on the various stages of child growth and developments and hence provide a rational guideline toward his care during celebrating different ceremonies from very conception to childhood.

➡️ Through this article lemme delight you people with the concept of Swarna Prashana.
Swarna Prashana is one of sixteen samskaras mentioned in ancient texts for paediatrics.

( Swarna means gold & Prashana means administration.)
The term Swarna Prashana was coined by Acharya Kashyapa.

Sometimes known by other names like, Swarna amruta prashana, Swarna prashana, Swarna prashan, Swarn prashan, Swarna bindu prashana or Suvarna prashan.

➡️ Administration of processed gold in children is a unique practice mentioned in Ayurveda as “Swarnaprashana” by Acharya Kashyapa thousands of years back.

➡️ Ayurveda propounds that prevention is an equally important aspect of disease management as cure and thus strengthening the immune system is a natural way to help the body fight against the diseases causing ailments.

Basically, childhood is the period of growth spurts. In Ayurveda texts, various acharyas described countless useful dravyas (drugs), yogas (formulations) and mode of conducts for adult to enhance the immunity (Bala and Vyadhikshmatva) & similarly for the healthy ksheerapa (infantile period), ksheerannada ( 1-2 year age period) and annada awastha ( age period from 2-16 years).

➡️ Swarnaprashana in children can be mainly implicated in two contexts of Ayurveda; Lehana (supplementary feeds) and Jatakarma Samskara (newborn care).

▪️Different Acharyas views on Swarna Prashana.

🔘According to Acharya Charaka,

atō’nantaraṁ jātakarma kumārasya kāryam |

tadyathā- madhusarpiṣī mantrōpamantritē yathāmnāyaṁ prathamaṁ prāśituṁ dadyāt |

stanamata ūrdhvamētēnaiva vidhinā dakṣiṇaṁ pātuṁ purastāt prayacchēt |

athātaḥ śīrṣataḥ sthāpayēdudakumbhaṁ mantrōpamantritam ||          –  (Charaka Samhita Sharirsthana 8/46)

➡️ On first day of birth, the child should be given first feeding of honey and ghrita consecrated (or blessed) with mantra as given for this purpose. Thereafter, firstly milk from the right breast should be offered (or given) to the child. A water filled pitcher and consecrated with mantras should be kept near the head of baby, probably to maintain proper humidity in Kumaragara (maternity home).

🔘Acharya Sushruta mentions on natal rites as:

tasmāt prathame’hni madhusarpiranantamiśraṃ , mantrapūtaṃ trikālaṃ pāyayet, dvitīye lakṣmaṇāsiddhaṃ sarpiḥ, tṛtīye ca; tataḥ prāṅnivāritastanyaṃ madhusarpiḥ svapāṇitalasammitaṃ dvikālaṃ pāyayet || – (Sushruta Samhita Sharirsthana 10/15)

The baby should be made to lick an electuary composed of honey, clarified butter and the expressed juice of Brahmi (Centella asiatica) leaves, Vacha (Acorus calamus L.), mixed with (half a Rati weight of) gold dust and given with the ring-finger of the feeder.

Daily Routine (दिनचर्या) as per Ayurveda

Daily Routine (दिनचर्या) as per Ayurveda

A daily routine is absolutely necessary to bring radical change in body, mind, and consciousness. Routine helps to establish balance in one's constitution. It also regularizes a person's biological clock, aids digestion, absorption and assimilation, and generates self-esteem, discipline, peace, happiness, and longevity.

Wake Up Early in the Morning

It is good to wake up before the sun rises, when there are loving (sattvic) qualities in nature that bring peace of mind and freshness to the senses. Sunrise varies according to the seasons, but on average vata people should get up about 6 a.m., pitta people by 5:30 a.m., and kapha by 4:30 a.m. Right after waking, look at your hands for a few moments, then gently move them over your face and chest down to the waist. This cleans the aura.

Say a Prayer before Leaving the Bed

"Dear God, you are inside of me, within my very breath, within each bird, each mighty mountain.

Your sweet touch reaches everything and I am well protected.

Thank you God for this beautiful day before me.

May joy, love, peace and compassion be part of my life and all those around me on this day.

I am healing and I am healed."

After this prayer touch the ground with your right hand, then the same hand to the forehead, with great love and respect to Mother Earth.

Clean the Face, Mouth, and Eyes

Splash your face with cold water and rinse out your mouth. Wash your eyes with cool water (or one of the eye washes mentioned below) and massage the eyelids by gently rubbing them. Blink your eyes 7 times and rotate your eyes in all directions. Dry your face with a clean towel.

Tridoshic eyewash: try triphala eyewash -¼ tsp. in 1 cup water, boil for 10 minutes, cool and strain.

Pitta eyewash: use cool water or rose water from organic rose petals - most commercial rose water has chemicals in it that will sting the eyes.

Kapha eyewash: try diluted cranberry juice, 3-5 drops in a teaspoon of distilled water.

Drink Water in the Morning

Then drink a glass of room temperature water, preferably from a pure copper cup filled the night before. This washes the GI track, flushes the kidneys, and stimulates peristalsis. It is not a good idea to start the day with tea or coffee, as this drains kidney energy, stresses the adrenals, causes constipation, and is habit-forming.

Evacuation

Sit, or better squat, on the toilet and have a bowel movement. Improper digestion of the previous night's meal or lack of sound sleep can prevent this. However the water, followed by sitting on the toilet at a set time each day, helps to regulate bowel movements. Alternate nostril breathing may also help. After evacuation wash the anal orifice with warm water, then the hands with soap.

Scrape your Tongue

Gently scrape the tongue from the back forward, until you have scraped the whole surface for 7-14 strokes. This stimulates the internal organs, helps digestion, and removes dead bacteria. Ideally, vata can use a gold scraper, pitta a silver one, and kapha copper. Stainless steel can be used by all people.

Clean your Teeth

Always use a soft toothbrush and an astringent, pungent, and bitter toothpaste or powder. The traditional Indian toothbrush is a neem stick, which dislodges fine food particles from between teeth and makes strong, healthy gums. Licorice root sticks are also used. Roasted almond shell powder can be used for vata and kapha, and ground neem for pitta.

Gargling

To strengthen teeth, gums, and jaw, improve the voice and remove wrinkles from cheeks, gargle twice a day with warm sesame oil. Hold the oil in your mouth, swish it around vigorously, then spit it out and gently massage the gums with a finger.

Chewing

Chewing a handful of sesame seeds helps receding gums and strengthens teeth. Alternatively, chew 3-5 dried dates and an inch of dried coconut meat. Chewing in the morning stimulates the liver and the stomach and improves digestive fire. After chewing, brush the teeth again without using toothpaste or powder.

Nasal Drops (Nasya)

Putting 3 to 5 drops of warm ghee or oil into each nostril in the morning helps to lubricate the nose, clean the sinuses, and improve voice, vision, and mental clarity. Our nose is the door to the brain, so nose drops nourish prana and bring intelligence.

For vata: sesame oil, ghee, or vacha (calamus) oil.

For pitta: brahmi ghee, sunflower or coconut oil.

For kapha: vacha (calamus root) oil.

Oil Drops in the Ears (Karana purana)

Conditions such as ringing in the ears, excess ear wax, poor hearing, lockjaw, and TMJ, are all due to vata in the ears. Putting 5 drops of warm sesame oil in each ear can help these disorders.

Apply Oil to the Head & Body (Abhyanga)

Rub warm oil over the head and body. Gentle, daily oil massage of the scalp can bring happiness, as well as prevent headache, baldness, graying, and receding hairline. Oiling your body before bedtime will help induce sound sleep and keep the skin soft.

For vata use warm sesame oil.

For pitta use warm sunflower or coconut oil.

For kapha use warm sunflower or mustard oil.

Bathing

Bathing is cleansing and refreshing. It removes sweat, dirt, and fatigue, brings energy to the body, clarity to the mind, and holiness to your life.

Dressing

Wearing clean clothes brings beauty and virtue.

Use of Perfumes

Using natural scents, essential oils, or perfumes brings freshness, charm, and joy. It gives vitality to the body and improves self-esteem.

For vata the best scent to use is hina or amber.

For pitta try using khus, sandalwood, or jasmine.

For kapha use either amber or musk.

Exercise

Regular exercise, especially yoga, improves circulation, strength, and endurance. It helps one relax and have sound sleep, and improves digestion and elimination. Exercise daily to half of your capacity, which is until sweat forms on the forehead, armpits, and spine.

Vata: Sun salutation x 12, done slowly; Leg lifting; Camel; Cobra; Cat; Cow. Slow, gentle exercise.

Pitta: Moon salutation x 16, moderately fast; Fish; Boat; Bow. Calming exercise.

Kapha: Sun salutation x 12, done rapidly; Bridge; Peacock; Palm tree; Lion. Vigorous exercise.

Pranayama

After exercise, sit quietly and do some deep breathing exercises as follows:

12 alternate nostril breaths for vata;

16 cooling shitali breaths (curling up your tongue lengthwise and breathing through it) for pitta;

100 bhastrika (short, fast breaths) for kapha.

Meditation

It is important to meditate morning and evening for at least 15 minutes. Meditate in the way you are accustomed, or try the "Empty Bowl Meditation". Meditation brings balance and peace into your life.

Now it is time for your breakfast!

Your meal should be light in the hot months or if your agni is low, and more substantial in the cold.

The afternoon Lunch

The ideal time to have lunch is at 12:00 p.m. or at the latest at 1:00 p.m. when the sun is at its peak. Your digestive fire is very strong and ready for the main meal of the day. When selecting your dishes and drinks, match them to your dosha type and the current season. After eating, you can take a short break. However, from an ayurvedic point of view, a nap is not advisable.

Afternoon

In the afternoon, continue with your usual activities. At the end of this second creative phase, yoga asanas, pranayama and transcendental meditation will gradually steer you towards a relaxing evening.

Evening Dinner

Polenta and Fennel Soup

According to the natural rhythm, you should have dinner at the latest at 6:00 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. Again, this is Kapha time with weak digestive fire. To avoid unnecessary strain on your digestive system during the night, dinner should be very light. Vegetable soup or kheechari (rice with yellow mung beans) are good options. You can find some of our recipes, such as our Polenta Fennel Soup, here.

Never eat too much at dinner because you will likely not be able to digest it. Animal protein is especially difficult to digest in the evening. Also, choose foods and drinks that suit your dosha type and the season.

Evening walk and time for rest

If you like, you can take a 10 to 15-minute walk after dinner. Then turn to pleasant, relaxing activities. Now is the right time for rest and relaxation. We suggest staying away from exciting thrillers, computer work or (too much) television.

Go to bed early

You should go to sleep not later than 10:00 p.m., at the start of Pitta time. If you are still awake after 10:00 p.m., your mind and body become active again, so that you may have trouble falling asleep. Then sleep occurs often very late.
